Blue-White Spring Game

Kroger Field – Lexington, Ky.

April 13, 2018

UK Student-Athletes

#12 Gunnar Hoak, QB

On how he thought he played tonight …

“Overall, I thought pretty good. Gotta get better, obviously that’s what spring is for: Going through and trying to compete with these other quarterbacks and getting this whole team better.”

On if there is anything in particular he thinks he needs to improve on …

Tonight there were a couple sacks that I need to get rid of. That’s not the o-line’s fault, it comes back to me where I just need to get rid of it, throw it away at times like that when the receivers aren’t open or just try to hit guys.”

On where he feels like he is strong and where he feels he could put more work …

“Strong, trying to stay in the pocket. Keep my eyes downfield. Working, obviously what Terry does well is getting loose and stuff like that. I have to work on footwork. One of my biggest goals was trying to get in the film room more often this spring and going through and seeing what I did then so I can put it together on the field.”

#3 Terry Wilson, QB

On how he felt about his UK debut …

“I feel like I did alright. Those first couple series I had to get the jitters out. It was the first time getting in Kroger Field with some people in it. I felt like I did alright.”

On where he’s made his biggest strides this spring …

“Really just getting in the film room and correcting my mistakes that I’m making on the practice field. Just going out there on the field and executing where I know where I had a bad play or a bad throw. It’s really just getting my confidence on the field and just going with it.”

On whether nerves played a factor in today’s game …

“Yeah, like I said, just seeing everybody out there in the stands you get a little nervous. But you just can’t let that effect you, especially in the quarterback position. You just got to bounce back.”

On what he needs to concentrate on over the summer …

“Many things. You got to watch film. That comes with a lot. Go out there and throw with the receivers. Keep that chemistry going, keep working with my feet. You know, you’ve got to keep your feet under you so you can make an accurate throw. It’s many things. Just getting out there and working and trying to get better at your craft.”

#33 David Bouvier, WR

On what the process of sliding up the depth chart from being walk-on has been like …

“It’s been tough. Not going to lie, starting out as a walk-on is always hard. You got to be perfect in practice. You got to earn everything you’ve got, but I’m glad I stuck with it. It’s had its challenges, but when you’ve got great quarterbacks and great coaches, it makes it easy.”

On what’s been the biggest challenge he’s faced …

“Being on scout team. You come from being ‘the guy’ at your school to now being the walk-on and having to work your way all the way up the depth chart. But it pays in the end to stay with it, do your best, work hard and come to work every day.”

On if he thinks he’s earned a role within the offense …

“I think so. I’ve worked my way. I’ve been here it seems like forever. People are going to start looking in on Lynn (Bowden) and Josh (Ali), all those guys, so there will be opportunities for me to catch the ball and do what I can do.”

#41 Josh Allen, OLB

On the defensive line making the biggest improvement this spring …

“You can see the difference from us last year in the run game and pass game compared to this year. Stopping the run and getting pass rushed really helps us out. For us, it opens up the middle for us to get sacks and keep the edge. They really have made a big change.

On if he accomplished his goals this spring …

“I believe I did. I think a lot of my teammates know that my main goal was to become a better leader on this team and this defense and I feel like I am doing that.”

#56 Kash Daniel, LB

On if this was the progress he wanted to see this spring …

“Absolutely. I think I took some great steps forward. As any player though, we always got things to improve on so I am looking forward to taking more steps into the fall and the summer.”

On Coach Joey Couch …

“I mean Joey was not only an inspiration to me, but to people all across the state of Kentucky. You know for me personally, when he came in I thought that it was like a king returning to his fortress. To be a part of Joey’s life, and for me to be in his life, was special. Especially when this whole recruiting process kicked off and I committed here, he was so proud of me and he taught me a lot of things. To lose someone like him, he was a big inspiration in my life. He is always going to be with me and watching me.”

#26, Benny Snell, RB

On what's left for him individually …

"To be smarter, be a better runner, become faster. I have a lot of growing to do and that'll come in the film room."

On best thing about spring overall …

"We get to see where we’re at outside of the season. I got to see Terry [Wilson] and Gunnar (Hoak) compete every day. I got to see my roommate AJ (Rose), he's gotten better. I've seen a lot of forward steps coming out of the offense."

On how the two quarterbacks have grown and changed...

"Gunnar and Terry compete every day. They do a great job and I know they're in the film room working hard. They make little mistakes if there's a line call or looking at the wrong receiver, but they're doing a great job. Stephen (Johnson) did a great job last year of knowing the defenses well and I think that’s what they need to understand a little bit more, but other than that, they're doing great. I'm definitely looking forward to the season."

On AJ Rose ...

"I’ve been waiting for bro to do that. He brings a lot of speed to the table and it's going to be exciting to watch him."

#17 Walker Wood, QB

On being on the field after injuries …

"It was awesome. It was a long process coming back. Hurting my knee in high school and then a little bump in the road when I got here in camp. Everyone around here has been really good in giving me time to come back. The coaches gave me time to come back and the trainers did a tremendous job on getting me back and healthy. Everyone around here has done everything possible to get me back to playing. I'm not 100 percent yet, but I'm getting closer. So, it felt really good out there tonight."

On when he hurt the shoulder…

"The second shoulder surgery happened about eight months ago, but I hurt it in camp last summer. It wasn’t feeling normal, so around the fourth of fifth practice I told the trainers. After my MRI we found out it was torn and we went from there. After that second shoulder surgery, it was hard coming back and very frustrating. Our trainers told me that I just have to keep going, going and going and I'll feel better, and that’s what I've done. I'm feeling a lot better and a lot closer."

On how he feels he's picking everything up …

"I'm doing alright. Having that redshirt year helped a lot. Coach (Darin) Hinshaw has done a really good job with all the quarterbacks and making sure we understand. He has a really good process of how we run our offense. We have rules for our plays and he tells us where to go and numerous things like that. He's made it easier for me, so I have to keep repping it. Being hurt for so long, I haven't been able to get those live reps in, so it felt really good for me. I enjoyed it."

#10 A.J. Rose, RB

On how good it felt to play …

“It felt real good to be out there and play in front of everybody, especially my family and friends. I just tried to do what I did when I was in high school and just play football again.”

On the struggles so far …

“I just struggle getting to learn the offense. It’s different coming from my high school. We didn’t learn as much as I did here so I had to just really sit down and focus. But, being with my roommate Benny Snell, he really helps me a lot. When we are at home, just walk the fields, just learning it, getting comfortable so once I got comfortable I knew I could go out there and play.”
