Crime Stoppers: Counterfeit Ring Strikes Again

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) A counterfeit ring that originated in the northeast and made its way to Central Kentucky continues to baffle Lexington detectives.

Lexington's counterfeit money ring might even be expanding as detectives search for clues.

"And that's the unfortunate thing. we really at this point have nothing," said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department.

Detective Thomas said that bleaching 1 dollar bills and turning them into 100 dollar bills is not a complex operation but they are very difficult to spot and nearly impossible to trace.

"If you have surfaces that are being touched a lot, where you have overlapping fingerprints, it's impossible to discern, which fingerprints are related to what because they overlap and they cross. so we can't lift a good fingerprint," said Detective Thomas.

They said they could identify at least one suspect, the driver of a Yukon Denali who had a criminal history.

Detectives said he is working with a woman at The Dari Mart on Reynolds Road.

"She ultimately has the connection to whoever it is who's holding these 'notes.' and we'd also like to find out who owns that truck," he said.

Detective Thomas said that they are buying tennis shoes, pizzas, and smaller things with the fake money, but they're getting real cash back in return.

If you have any information that could lead to an arrest, your tip could get you a cash reward from Bluegrass Crime Stoppers. You can call in your tip at (859) 253-2020 or text your information to 'CRIMES', just put 'LEX P-D' in the message, along with your tip.
