Tax Filing Deadline Arrives: Are You Ready?

Posted: Updated:

(LEX 18/CNN/NBC News) — This marks one of the most dreaded days of every calendar year: tax filing day.

The deadline to file is 11:59 p.m., but there are ways to seek an extension if needed.

Normally, April 15 is the dreaded filing day, but this year that fell on a Sunday.

And April 16 was observed as the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C., so April 17 is this year's deadline day.

The good news if you aren't ready is most people can file for an extension.

A 4868 Form will give you an additional six months to work on your taxes. The bad news: You may pay a little more if you wait.

"While you can extend the time to file your taxes, the government still does expect you to make a payment to what your estimated tax liability may be," says tax attorney Rebecca Walser. "And if you don't make that payment, you can have a penalty and interest charges racking up for those six months."

So if you want to keep more of your money, it's best to file before midnight.
