Owner, Animal Shelter Question Missing Dogs

Posted: Updated:

DANVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) -- A central Kentucky animal shelter said there were about a dozen missing dog cases within the last four days, and now the head of the organization is calling the cases suspicious.

Wendy Howard of Danville said her 7-year-old dog, Gracie, was missing since Sunday. "We have searched high and low," she said. "It's not about Gracie anymore. It's about a situation that we might have."

The situation, she preludes, is nearly a dozen more Boyle County area dog owners are also searching for their four-legged friends.

"Other people have popped up from neighboring counties of me, that seem to have the same problem," Howard added.

That includes Casey and Garrard Counties, officials said.

"With that number of dogs missing, and no body calling them in, makes it appear that someone is stealing the dogs," said Brittany Fain with the Garrard County Animal Shelter.

The Boyle County Sheriff's Office has taken a report of a missing dog, and Fain added Garrard County deputies found out too about the missing animals.
So far, there's no official investigation about a theft, but the case, deputies say, is suspicious.

"You need to keep your dogs really close," Fain added. "If you leave your dogs outside when you go to work, keep you dogs inside where it's safe, I would do that as of now."

However some good news for Howard and Gracie. She said she was found a few miles away from her home before 5:00 p.m. Thursday, but believes the fact the dog was not dirty and given the recent weather, the dog did not run away, but was taken.

"We don't want this problem surrounding our pets and our communities," Howard said.

If you have any information on the missing dogs, to contact your local sheriff's department.
