Laurel? Yanny? This Sound Clip Broke The Internet

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - The masses are finally debating something other than politics and  it all started with a seemingly innocuous clip.

A low-quality audio clip first uploaded to reddit has people all across the country hearing two totally different words  After much debate in the LEX 18 newsroom, we decided to take it to the experts.

The post asks a simple question. Do you hear the word "Laurel" or "Yanny?" The problem is, much like 'The Dress' debate in 2017, people are listening to the exact same recording and hearing two different words.

Dr. Shelley Heath with Bluegrass Hearing in Mount Sterling says she is 100% "Team Laurel" but says there's a pretty simple explanation.

The words follow a similar pathway.

"So, people are just mishearing those sounds through a degraded audio clip on their phone or what have you. Then your brain picks what it wants to hear and some people hear Laurel and some people hear yanny," explains Dr. Heath.

The device you're listening on also can factor in to what you hear.

Either way, it's likely you very strongly believe in what you hear. We couldn't find an exact consensus on what the word actually is.

One person even told us, "It sounds like my grandmother's stomach."

Which do you hear?
