Woman Searching for Therapy Dog Stolen in Car Theft

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)-- A Lexington mother is pleading for the public's help in finding her son's therapy dog.

April Mink said the 8-month old pit bull, Reina, was in the back of her car Monday morning when someone stole it from the Kroger off Leestown Road.

"I was in about 15 to 20 minutes, came back out and the she was gone," Mink said.

Like every morning, Mink took Reina on a walk through the neighborhood, before driving to Kroger to buy her treats. She left the car running and unlocked while inside.

"I just don't want her burning up," Mink said. "I'm not going to leave my son in the car with the air off, I'm not going to leave her."

Mink said Reina isn't just a pet, she's training to be a therapy dog for her 20-year-old son who has severe depression and Asperger syndrome--a form of autism.

"If she was here she would see it, she would sense it," said Mink. " She would come straight up to him, rub her head up against his leg, jump up in his lap."

Mink just wants to get the dog back for her son and said she'll pay a reward of $200.

"We don't even care about the car at this point, we need her," she said. "The car can be replaced, it's going to be hard replacing her."

Police say this is a good reminder that it's illegal to leave your car running unattended.

They didn't cite Mink and are investigating the car theft.

If you find Reina, or the gold Cadillac SRX with Kentucky tags 849 TDF, Mink says give her a call at 859-381-7160
