Hikers Stumble Upon Litter Of Abandoned Puppies In Gorge

Posted: Updated:

CAMPTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - Two hikers got an unexpected surprise while walking in the Red River Gorge this weekend.

Angela Turner, one of the hikers, posted a photo of the puppies to her social media. Turner says she and Hailee Reed found the animals dumped over the side of the road near a trail they'd just finished hiking.

"I see his head poke up, then I see another, then I see another," said Reed. "Before I knew it, there were six puppies in the front seat of our vehicle."

Reed said she and Turner looked for an owner or mother nearby but had no luck. They then went down the road to Miguel's Pizza and announced to the crowd what they found.

Later that afternoon, Turner posted to Facebook about her find.

"Post hike at the Gorge. We stumbled upon an abandoned litter of puppies off the trail. Who needs one? Also, can you find a pile of puppies and not keep one? That’s a rule, right?" wrote Turner.

Turner tells LEX 18 that she has found homes for three of the animals. Two more still need homes and, of course, Turner is adopting one herself.

She and Reed plan to stay in touch with the new families of each puppy. They hope to have a reunion hike with everyone in the future on the same trail near where the litter was found.
