FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — Police are investigating after a woman was found shot to death Tuesday morning in Frankfort. Police are asking individuals to keep an eye out for a person of interest in the case.

Franklin County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call from a family member of the victim, authorities say.

Officers responding to the home on Meadow Glen Drive found 39-year-old Margaret Elizabeth Smith dead with a gunshot wound to her head.

They have identified the person-of-interest as Derek Garten.  Smith had a protective order against him.

Garten is most likely in a Toyota 4 Runner with a front vanity plate that reads "punisher."

Deputies say the assailant remains at large but say neighbors are safe.

"Deputies responded this morning to a residence here on Meadow Glen in reference to a 39-year-old female who apparently had a gunshot wound to the head," said Franklin County Sheriff's Lt. Russ Persons. "This is kind of a random call for this neighborhood. Like I said, it’s under investigation at this time. Neighbors are concerned, so we told them the scene is safe, and we feel the neighborhood is safe at this time."

Persons added that police were still investigating the home and processing any evidence.
