The Lexington Legends took down the Greensboro Grasshoppers led by lights out pitching by Legends’ starter Carlos Hernandez, 2-1. The Legends took the series and are now 45-41 and the Grasshoppers drop 43-44.
Carlos Hernandez pitched 7.0 innings striking out a career high 12 batters. His bullpen then backed him up with Danny Hrbek throwing 1.0 inning, striking out three and Jacob Condra-Bogan recording two strikeouts in the ninth.
The Grasshoppers got on the board in the top of the second inning. Will Allen popped up a fly ball to right field, but it bounced off the glove of Seuly Matias and Allen made it to second base. The very next batter, Garvis Lara, then lined an RBI single to left field, scoring Allen and Greensboro led 1-0.
The Legends plated both their runs in the bottom of the third. Marten Gasparini sent a double hugging the right field line then advanced to third on a single by Ricky Aracena. Greensboro’s pitcher, Daniel Castano, threw a check throw to first and Gasparini saw his opportunity. He stole home, tying the game 1-1. Aracena was then picked off at first for the second out of the inning. Brewer Hicklen then smacked his 11th homer of the season, depositing it over the right field fence putting the Legends up 2-1.
The Legends now hit the road to first face the Augusta GreenJackets after a scheduled off day tomorrow, July 10. Lexington will face Augusta in game one, July 11 at 7:05 p.m. and both teams are TBD.
