Federal Judge Upholds Sentence Of Doctor In Social Security Scheme

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - An Eastern Kentucky doctor, who aided a disgraced lawyer in a Social Security scheme, has lost an appeal to overturn his sentence.

Alfred Bradley Adkins was sentenced Friday for his role in the scheme orchestrated by attorney Eric Conn. Earlier this year, Conn pleaded guilty to stealing from the government and bribing a judge in order to secure Social Security disability benefits for his clients.

Prosecutors say Adkins signed forms that contained false information about Conn's clients. Conn paid him $350 for each assessment.

He received a 25-year sentenced, which he appealed. Adkins argued that improper testimony was allowed in the case regarding how much money Social Security lost.

Of the three defendants in the case, Adkins received the most time. Conn initially received 12 years, although due to his subsequent escape, he will have more time added to his sentence. Judge David Daugherty received four years for his role in rubber-stamping the applications.

The appeal was denied and the judge explained that Adkins' sentence was longer because he went to trial instead of accepting a plea deal.

Adkins is expected to be released in April of 2039.
