Lexington's Plantory scaling down to help grow

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX18) — Help good grow. Three little words, one big mission. That is what The Plantory stands for.

"We really are the connectivity that links everything together," The Plantory Interim Executive Director Stephanie Spires said.

The Plantory has been an integral part of the local non-profit community for decades. They help with a myriad of necessities like affordable staffing. At their lime green space on West Sixth Street, they have housed multiple non-profits in their co-working space.

"In 2019 for example, we helped over 50 non-profits with training, with services, with support," Spires said.

Typically, the West Sixth space is as vibrant and energetic as the paint on the walls. However, thanks to COVID-19, all of that came to a screeching halt.

"Honestly it’s been a little depressing for the last three or four months because nobody’s in here," Spries lamented.

With the lack of people in the space also meant money stopped coming in, so it was time to start making difficult decisions.

"We could spend a couple hundred thousand dollars on this space and keep it empty, or we could use that money and really help the non-profits that are hurting," Spires explained.

So that is what they decided to do. They are leaving their building behind to continue building a brighter future for others, being what they believe is a good steward of people's money and putting it directly into non-profits that need help now more than ever.

"I’m sad to see this chapter go," Spires said, "But I’m excited because I think we’re really going to have an impact going forward."

The Plantory will announce their new location later in the summer of 2020. On July 29 and 30 they will be selling the remaining furnishings from their current location. For more information head to their website.
