LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Additional Lexington police officers will be on the streets Sunday night, keeping an eye out for drunk drivers.

The heightened surveillance is in preparation for people on their way home from watching the Super Bowl.

“Anything that will impair you is something we’re concerned about,” said Lt. Chris Van Brackel.

The police department uses grant money from the Kentucky Cabinet of Transportation to pay for the extra officers and overtime.

“Days when more people are gonna have a reason to be out and celebrate are days we’re gonna pay attention to,” said Van Brackel.

Van Brackel said Fridays and Saturdays are the most common days for the department to make DUI arrests. In fact, he explained there are several Sundays in the year where no DUI arrests are made at all, but Super Bowl Sunday stands out.

In 2018, LPD made three DUI arrests. In 2017, the police department recorded four arrests of people driving under the influence of alcohol.

“When you think about how there are Sundays that we don’t make any arrests, four on Super Bowl Sunday stand out,” he said.
