LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — On Monday morning in downtown Lexington, an announcement was made regarding the "Breaking the Bronze Ceiling" monument that's set for installation in August of 2020.

The Women's Suffrage Centennial Chorus kicked off the announcement on Women's Equality Day.

The event was focused around the meaning of the future monument - recognizing the contributions of women throughout Lexington history.

Mayor Linda Gorton explained more than 120 artists expressed interest in creating the monument and now they are down to four, who will each submit their design soon.

Dudley Webb of Webb Companies then announced the Lexington Financial Center Plaza as available for the location of the monument.

Former Gov. Martha Layne Collins was there for the festivities.

"Not that we have to have recognition, that's not the point. But, the point is that we want to be examples for younger women," said Collins.

Supporters said they are trying to raise $500,000 for the monument. So far, supporters have raised about half of their goal.
