MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Ja Morant was unheralded several years ago, not drawing much attention out of high school in South Carolina. But after a stellar second season at Murray State his draft stock rose. On Thursday night he became the second pick in the NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies.
NEW YORK (AP) — The trade-filled NBA draft is complete. Sacramento took Serbian guard Vanja Marinkovic with the 60th and final selection. That capped a night that saw Duke and No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson starting off a big draft haul for the Atlantic Coast Conference. The league had a record six lottery picks, 10 first-rounders and 13 overall picks. The Southeastern Conference was second with 12 overall picks, while no other league had more than six.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Drew Campbell’s single off Cole Gordon drove in Danny Oriente for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and Louisville eliminated Mississippi State with a 4-3 victory in the College World Series. The Cardinals made up a three-run deficit to advance past a third game at the CWS for the first time in its five appearances.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte Hornets selected forward PJ Washington from Kentucky with the 12th overall pick in the NBA draft. The 6-foot-8, 230-pound Washington averaged 15.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season for the Wildcats. He boasts a 7-foot-3 wingspan and improved his shooting after returning for his sophomore season with the Wildcats. He shot 42.3 percent from 3-point range as a sophomore. The Hornets took another forward in the second round, selecting 6-7, 200-pound Cody Martin from Nevada.
MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Heat selected Kentucky sharpshooter Tyler Herro with the 13th pick in the NBA draft. Herro was a 36 percent shooter from 3-point range in his lone college season for the Wildcats, and went 87 for 93 from the foul line. He was picked as the SEC’s newcomer of the year, and the Wildcats were 19-0 when he scored at least 15 points.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cavaliers gave rookie coach John Beilein some first-year projects. Cleveland used the No. 5 pick in the NBA draft to take point guard Darius Garland, who played just five games at Vanderbilt because of a knee injury. The Cavs will pair Garland in the backcourt with 2018 first-round pick Collin Sexton, who had a strong rookie season. Cleveland took Belmont swingman Dylan Windler at 26 and acquired USC guard Kevin Porter Jr. by trading for the No. 30 pick with Detroit.
