BEREA, Ky. (LEX 18) - — Berea police are warning residents of a new scam that has been occurring over Facebook Marketplace.
According to a post by police, the scammer will advertise an apartment or home for rent on the social network's sales site. In each instance, the victim arranged to meet with offender and pay them for the first month's rent in cash.
The victims all met with a woman who took the cash and gave them a handwritten receipt. Then, they never heard from her again.
Police advise that if you plan to rent a new house or apartment you should always get the person's name and phone number and meet at the location where you are planning to move.
