LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Lexington man is making the future brighter through a program that helps young men become leaders and promote excellence.
The program is called the Alpha League. It is a group of 25 young men, predominantly of color, with bright futures.
Christian Adair, who said his life was transformed by a mentor when he was a child, created the nomination-based program for kids. Over the years, he has mentored 50 young men, giving them the skills to be leaders, public speakers and successful people throughout their lives.
“I know they have a lot more potential than that, and they have the opportunity they can learn just like everyone else they just need to be given that opportunity,” said Adair.
Bryson Fields, who is in high school, says that the Alpha League transformed him.
“It changed my life, honestly,” said Fields.
The group meets once a week, sometimes more, at Bryan Station Middle School. They memorize poems, do community service and always practice gentlemanly behavior. All with the help of Adair.
“He’s been like a father figure to me over the years. Whenever I need somebody he’s always in my corner,” said Fields.
Adair said he founded the Alpha League with a Frederick Douglass quote in mind, “it’s easier to build strong children than to mend broken men.”
“It makes me feel good, my chest gets big. That’s why a lot of times, I put my boys in front to speak because I’m a lot more proud about what they do and what they say than myself,” said Fields.
