HARRODSBURG, Ky. (LEX 18) — One person is dead after being struck by a train in Harrodsburg.
The crash happened early Friday on the tracks near Factory Street. According to the Mercer County Coroner, a female was on the tracks and did not get out of the way in time for a passing Norfolk Southern train. The first 911 call came in at 4:51 a.m.
The woman had no identification. Her body has been sent to Frankfort for an autopsy.
Norfolk Southern has released a statement on the incident:
At about 4:45 a.m. today, a Norfolk Southern coal train struck and fatally injured an individual on the railroad tracks near Cornishville Road in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.
Norfolk Southern personnel assisted local law enforcement in investigating the incident.
The southbound train was en route from Mount Vernon, Illinois, to Heard County, Georgia, when the incident occurred.
Norfolk Southern reminds the public that it is extremely dangerous, and also trespassing, to walk on or within the right-of-way of railroad tracks. People should cross tracks only at designated crossings and use extreme caution at all times.
