LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Once again, the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team has clinched a World Cup title.
The team rolled to victory over the Netherlands on Sunday.
Fans gathered at KSBar & Grille in Lexington for a watch party hosted by the local chapter of the American Outlaws. The Outlaws are a nationwide fan group for USA soccer teams.
A big crowd packed the bar for the game even spilling into the bar next door, and fans had their pride and passion on full display.
“Such a big following for women's soccer in Lexington, Kentucky is amazing, and we love that people have been getting behind it,” said one fan.
For the second straight World Cup, the players on the USA women's team have captured the hearts and minds of people across the country with their tenacity and grit, on and off the field.
"The team is awesome. So many fun girls that you can follow who can be inspirations to younger soccer players. It's been a fun tournament,” said fan Taylor Rendon.
“For young girls everywhere it shows that sports is important for them to, for all that it brings,” said fan Beverly Henderson.
Leaders of the American Outlaws hope that message resonates with many of the fans in the area.
“It gives you a sense of belonging to something that is bigger than you,” said Henderson.
But not everyone felt quite at home. There was one Dutch fan in the crowd who described the atmosphere as a little overwhelming and lonely for him.
USA fans weren’t gloating though. While excitement was high, they’ve been there before.
The team has now won four World Cups, and this is their second title in a row.
