MARSHALL COUNTY, Ky. (WPSD/LEX 18) — Some swimmers and boaters got an unusual surprise when an alligator turned up at a western Kentucky lake.

The gator was reportedly spotted on Saturday near the paddle-boat area at Kentucky Lake.

Conservation Officer Lee Cope with Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife told our partners at WPSD that when officers arrived, the alligator had apparently been injured by a boat.

Unfortunately, the animal later died from its injuries.

Conservation officers say alligators are not native to Kentucky.

Fish and Wildlife officials believe the the gator was dumped in the area. They say it may have been a pet.
