LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Lexington health officials said Tuesday afternoon that a third case of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, had been confirmed at a city school.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department officials say the latest case was confirmed at Athens-Chilesburg Elementary. Previous cases had been confirmed at Tates Creek and Henry Clay high schools.

Pertussis is a respiratory illness that is spread by sneezing and coughing.

Health Department officials were recommending antibiotics for high-risk students, including those with weakened immune systems or serious illnesses.

A vaccine is typically given to children, but a booster may be needed after age 11.
