LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — In response to protests across the country, Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton has released a short message.

She reflects on the protests this week, but also on the "painful events rooted in injustice" that led to the demonstrations.

This comes after two straight nights of protests in Louisville, and a peaceful demonstration in Lexington on Friday night.

My heart hurts for our nation, as painful events rooted in injustice have left several people dead or wounded, and families in pain.

You don’t have to live in Louisville or Minneapolis or Brunswick to feel that pain, as those who protested on our streets showed last night. The protesters on our streets were joined in spirit by citizens across our city, including me.

For many years, the last two as Mayor, I have marched on the day we set aside to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Each year, I have vowed to continue to march toward diversity and inclusion … vowed to work diligently to combat injustice …vowed to make Lexington a City that truly welcomes everyone.

For all the pain of recent days, they remind us once again of the urgent need to act. Lexington is a wonderful city full of caring people, but we’re not perfect. We’ve made progress, but there’s more to do.

The work ahead of us starts with listening … listening to the voices of all of our citizens to ensure all feel welcome here.

Listening, then working together every day, not just Martin Luther King Day, to heal and bring unity, progress and peace.

Thank you.
Mayor Linda Gorton
