It’s been five years since Jon Stewart signed off as the host of “The Daily Show.” Now, the comedian is once again coming back to the small screen with the debut of a new Apple TV+ series. The new show does not yet have a title, but it sounds similar in genre to “The Daily Show,” with Stewart exploring current events in hourlong, single-subject episodes. Each season will also have an accompanying podcast.
Stewart has signed a multiyear deal for the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and in addition to hosting, he will also executive produce the series through his Busboy Productions. His longtime manager James Dixon and former HBO chief Richard Plepler will also executive produce with him. His deal with the streaming service also includes first-look rights for other projects to be developed and produced for Apple.
Although Stewart has been largely out of the spotlight since 2015, he still feels very much involved in politics.
“I think there are different ways to be in the conversation,” he told The New York Times in June. “I consider a career to be a conversation. Action is conversation, and I’ve taken more action in the last four or five years than I ever have in my life. Sometimes that action can speak more profoundly than a daily monologue. So I don’t view myself as being out of the conversation: I view myself as not having a show.”
Since leaving “The Daily Show,” Stewart has spent much of his time on advocacy work on behalf of 9/11 first responders and wounded veterans. He also wrote and directed “Irresistible,” a political satire film.
In his interview with the Times, he addressed whether he would consider doing a TV show again in the future.
“And if you’re asking, ‘Do you wish you had a show?’ Sometimes I do,” he continued. “But not the one that I had. The one that I had is in wonderful hands and continues to elevate in a way that I couldn’t have. My efficacy for that kind of conversation has passed.”
Trevor Noah took over as the host of “The Daily Show” following Stewart’s departure.
We can’t wait to see what the new show will be like!
