FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — Kentucky's largest butterfly greenhouse is now open to the public.

The butterfly greenhouse at Wilson's Nurseries in Frankfort houses from 500-1,000 butterflies. All of them are native to Kentucky.

People visiting the greenhouse can see the types of plants the butterflies like, and they can experience the butterflies up close.

Staff members say it is unlike anything you'll find in the wild.

"You can see them at your house, you can't see 1,000 or 500 or whatever is in here at the time. It's been a great positive experience for everybody so far," said butterfly greenhouse entomologist Matthew Geis.

Guests were able to release their own butterflies into the greenhouse Thursday. At the end of the season, some of them will be outfitted with tracking devices so people can learn about their migration patterns.
