LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — An emotional homecoming took place Saturday after a Lexington man was released from the hospital following a battle with COVID-19.

49-year-old Jerome Johnson spent almost a month in UK Hospital.

Johnson tells LEX18 he was admitted to the hospital on April 4th, "I just fell straight back because of shortness of breath."

Shortly after he arrived at UK, he was put on a ventilator for more than a week.

While he was there fighting the virus, Johnson couldn't see his friends and family.

So they decided to do something extra special to show him how much they missed him.

Friends and family greeted him outside of Coventry Oak Elementary School on his way home.

His family says this experience has made them realize just how serious this virus is, his nephew Orintheal Beatty says he won't take time with his family for granted again.

"If you're going to say I'll call you tomorrow... don't wait cause you never know if you'll have that chance again," says Beatty.

As for Johnson, he says he's feeling better than ever, "I'm able to walk stand on my own I can feel the pep in my step coming back, I just feel great."
