LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Lexington Police initiative aimed at addressing violent crime has led to 13 arrests.

Police partnered with personnel from the ATF, FBI, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Marshals Service, Kentucky Probation and Parole, and prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Commonwealth’s Attorney office and County Attorney office.

A Lexington Police spokesperson said in a release that the goal of the operation was to tackle recent violent crime in the community, and to locate people suspected of drug trafficking or being involved in a number of recent shootings.

The collective efforts resulted in:

  • 13 felony arrests of nine adults and four juveniles
  • 15 handguns seized (including 3 stolen and one with an extended magazine)
  • 787 grams of fentanyl (approximately 1.73 pounds) and approximately 10 grams of cocaine seized

According to police the initiative was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program, a partnership between law enforcement, prosecutors, and community leaders to address violent crime through a unified approach.

Reportedly some of the individuals charged are believed to be associated with violent crimes that have taken place in Lexington, and investigators are working with partners to prosecute several cases at the federal level.
