HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Local Catholic priest, Father Jim Sichko, made good on his promise to help coal miners in Eastern Kentucky by handing out more than $20,000 on Monday in Harlan County.

The miners were affected by the Black Jewel Mining bankruptcy.

People crowded the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Harlan County as Sichko signed checks for more than 100 miners.

Black Jewel filed for Chapter 11 at the beginning of July and said they would need about $6 million to pay employees.

Hunders of people were affected and paychecks for the last pay period bounced.
