LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A local community activist and hip hop artist is continuing to give back this summer through an event called Community on the Corners.

Devine Carama told LEX 18's Claire Crouch that with this new initiative, he decided to take it back to the "essence where hip hop started," the street corners.

The first Community on the Corners back in June was a success. Carama helped dozens of families on the west end of downtown. He passed out diapers, detergent, and school supplies, all while performing hip hop music.

"They come up they hear the good music, and they see these items and they ask, 'well how much does it cost' and we're like' 'it's free,'" said Carama.

His success with this new event did not come easily, he said that before the event, the cash he raised was stolen. Carama says that the community has his back, and he recovered what he lost and then some.

"My church, my family, friends, and really the community, just kinda came together and not only replenished what was stolen, but even gave me a little more," he said.

The final Community on the Corners event this summer will be on Saturday on the east end of downtown. The event is from 5:30-6:30 p.m. outside Beasley's Unlimited at 211 East 7th Street. The event is free and open to the public. No qualifications are necessary.

"You never know how that might impact them moving forward, and maybe one day, they can pay it forward and to me, that's what community is about," Carama said.

He hopes to pick the event back up and be able to do it throughout the year.
