CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (LEX18) — Hannah's Care Packages is a local non-profit that helps families with children in long-term hospital stays, and on Saturday they are getting a boost from some people who know a thing or two about lifting.

Mount Vernon's Iron Mafia Powerlifting is proving they not only have big muscles but also big hearts.

"We wanted to show people that the powerlifting community is just not a bunch of people lifting weights, " Shana Miller explained.

For the second year they are partnering with Hannah's Care Packages after one of their own was helped by the organization.

"They really impacted not only them but us," Miller said.

Started by Jessica Ball in 2015 after watching one of her friends go through the exhaustion and agony of spending countless hours at the hospital with their child, Hannah's Care Packages delivers relief and hope to families who have children in the hospital long-term.

"The care packages have things like toiletries and necessities for mom and dad, so they can take care of themselves since the hospital takes very good care of their child, " founder Jessica Ball explained.

Over the past five years, they've delivered around 1,000 packages to 26 different states. To carry out their mission, Hannah's Care Packages needs donations and support of their own, so on Saturday the powerlifters will provide just that.

"It's a bittersweet feeling because you're taking a passion that you love and you're combining it with a family that needs it, " said Shana Miller of Iron Mafia.

The event on Saturday will be an all out powerlifting competition at Winchester's Crossfit Strode Station. Miller said to expect loud music, family fun, hugs, and probably even tears of joy. To add a little extra motivation, families and kids directly helped by Hannah's Care Packages will be right there cheering on the men and women lifting in their honor.

"You're not just lifting for yourself...you're lifting for these families, and it just brings a whole new meaning not just to that day but to the sport, " Miller explained.
