(LEX 18) — Officials are searching for an individual who they believed drowned in Kentucky River just outside of Wilmore.

The search for the individual began at 6 pm, but the search has been suspended due to the darkness. Continued search is expected to pick back up at 8 am Friday morning.

"At this point unfortunately we are considering this a recovery operation," Assistant Chief of the Jessamine County Fire District Danny Eades said. "We've suspended operations tonight due to the darkness and the conditions of the water. We're going to start back up tomorrow morning first thing."

The river currently has a severe undercurrent which tends to be extremely hard on swimmers.

According to a witness, a group of people were hanging at a lock and the individual decided to jump in the water on his own. The individual is an adult male. His name cannot be released.
