CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. (LEX 18) — A Middlesboro man is in a Tennessee jail after police said he escaped custody in Bell County.

The sheriff's office said Chris Smith, 18, was cuffed and placed in a cruiser Friday, after police had to investigate a domestic violence incident.

While a deputy interviewed the alleged victim, Smith got out of the cruiser and ran away, according to police.

Smith was arrested a short time later in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He was still wearing handcuffs when he was arrested.

Since the initial charge was a misdemeanor, authorities are not seeking extradition as of right now.

However, additional charges are pending.
