LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — As of the beginning of January the flu is considered widespread in 39 states including Kentucky.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department has released that there are 27 new cases of the flu since December 30, this brings the total number to 64 this flu season.

Kimberly Harris, a clinical service coordinator with the health department says flu numbers usually go up after the holidays, "With the holidays people are together, and that can result in an increase in cases where people are closely together indoors celebrating New Years and Christmas so that's pretty common."

We also spoke to Doctor Shawn Taylor, a pediatrician at A Caring Touch Clinic who says most importantly everyone who is able to should get the immunization, but if you do get sick stay home.
