MAYSVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) — A 17-year-old boy died following a single-vehicle collision on KY 3056 east of Moyer Road intersection.

Mason County Sheriff's Office and emergency officials responded to the collision at approximately 4:05 p.m. Thursday, August 3.

The sheriff's office said a vehicle was traveling eastbound on KY 3056 when it went off the right side of the roadway and struck several trees as well as telephone poles.

The vehicle was being driven by a 17-year-old male who was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on scene by the coroner.

The Mason County Coroner identified the victim as Coltin Lee Claypoole, a student at Mason County High School.

Three other people — a 13-year-old and two 17-year-old males — were also inside the car and transported to a hospital.

Claypoole was going to be a junior this year and played on the Mason County High School football team.

Mason County High School principal, Seth Faulkner, released a statement regarding the crash:

Our hearts are extremely heavy today and our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the students and families who have been impacted by yesterday’s tragic event. We learned late yesterday afternoon that four Mason County students were involved in a car accident, resulting in one fatality. This is the type of news that you never want to receive. Our attention and energy will now be focused on supporting the families and putting plans in place to help our school, students, and community cope and heal over the next several days and weeks.

The collision is under investigation.
