STANTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – A loud boom, followed by a crash. That’s what neighbors along a Powell County street heard in the middle of the night.

"I mean it sounded just like a cannon you know. It scared me," said Trina Rogers.

A tree fell on top of a duplex on Strange Street, and now families are stuck in a motel as the work to clean up their damaged home continues.

Trina Rogers lives next door to her sister and mother, who is on an oxygen tank.

It was their house that the tree fell on top of. She feared the worst when she walked inside.

"She (her mother) is fine. She’s fine. She’s scared, but she’s fine," said Rogers.

The Red Cross checked them into a motel while crews got to work trying to cut and remove the tree.

Greg Shelton says his team will keep working until the tree is completely removed from the home. Then, the roofers will come in and assess the damage to see if the roof can be fixed.

"I’d say the building is probably destroyed. I mean a tree has gone through the roof, both apartments electricity are out, it’s probably a total loss for this guy," said Shelton.

The Powell County Emergency Management Director says this was one of three homes damaged in the storm. The other two were vacant.
