LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – Cake makes everything better…including exercise.

Sweet Blessings Bakery is hosting the 7th annual Great Cake Race 5K/1M.  The bakery makes specialty birthday cakes for children who may would not be able to otherwise afford them.

In February, volunteers created specialty birthday cakes for 133 children in 14 hours during Sweet Blessings’ annual Bake-a-Thon (on Feb. 27).

People of all ages––including those in strollers––can participate in the Great Cake Race 5K/1M at Keeneland the day after Derby. Dogs on leashes are also welcome. The race starts at 4 p.m. with sign-in and race day registration at 2:30 p.m. at Keene Barn. Awards will be given for age groups, special stroller and canine divisions, and overall winners. Team awards will also be handed out to the largest teams in each of 5 divisions: corporate, church, family, school and open.

Proceeds from the Great Cake Race benefit Sweet Blessings, a 501(c)(3) that creates unforgettable birthday cakes for children living in poverty, with a life-threatening illness or special needs to help them feel special and loved on their birthday.

There will be ice cream and cake…of course.

Early bird pricing until April 15 for the 2018 Great Cake Race is $25 for the 5K (with chip timing by Good Times Event Services) and $20 for the one-mile distance. After April 15, online registration is $30 for the 5K and $25 for one mile. Signup is available online at SweetBlessingsCakes.org.
