LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – A milestone birthday Sunday for a special Lexington man.

Dr. Charles Roland celebrated his 100th birthday, surprised with a party by family, friends, former students and colleagues.

“He’s just so fun to talk to. I mean my favorite memories are sitting around the lunch table just listening to stories. We would just ask him anything we could think of, and he would just tell us all about history and all about his life,” said Headrick.

Deanna Headrick knows him as grandpa, but most know Dr. Roland as a World War II veteran, a beloved former UK history professor and skilled author.

Testimonials and letters from former colleagues and students were also read.

“It made me feel great. I appreciate it,” said Roland.

After singing happy birthday, a line formed to greet Dr. Roland. He says he feels pretty good for making it to 100.
