LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Lexington teachers are rallying Wednesday morning to bring attention to budget and pension issues.

Rally organizers say teachers were expected at Beaumont Centre along Harrodsburg Road beginning at 5 a.m.

And while Gov. Matt Bevin’s decision Tuesday night to sign the pension overhaul bill into law, this rally was planned after the governor vetoed budget and tax bills earlier this week.

Educators across the commonwealth were disappointed with the vetoes, because more funding for public education was included.

Meanwhile, the State of the South 2018 Report, published by the nonprofit advocacy group MDC, says Southern states need to spend more on public schools.

The report, released Tuesday, says state leaders have failed to adequately invest in public schools, higher education and other resources to prepare the next generation of workers.

The Lexington teachers are encouraging parents and other community members to join the rally in support.
