LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – A movie based on an infamous failed book heist at Transylvania University is coming to theatres soon.

"American Animals" is loosely based on the story of four young Lexington men who stole rare books and works of art, including prints by artist John James Audubon, from Transy’s Library. They were caught after they tried to sell them at Christie’s Auction House.

At 19 and 20 years old Warren Lipka, Chas Allen, Eric Borsuk and Spencer Reinhard stunned, blind-folded and tied up a librarian to steal the priceless books and art.

All four men served 7 1/2 years in federal prison.
