LOS ANGELES, Ca (LEX 18) – Award winning actor R. Lee Ermey, best known for his role as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in the film Full Metal Jacket passed away at the age of 74 on Sunday.
Ermey’s long time manger confirmed the news on Ermey’s Twitter page. He cited complications from pneumonia as the cause of death.
According to his IMDB page, Ermey was a former Marine Corps drill instructor and also served in Vietnam and Okinawa, Japan. Ermey went on to appear in numerous films, often playing military-inspired roles. His most famous role came as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 film Full Metal Jacket for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.
