LONDON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A federal grand jury has convicted a London doctor with health care fraud over accusation he unnecessarily implanted pacemakers in dozens of patients.

Dr. Anis Chalhoub was convicted April 11, according to the office of Robert Duncan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky.

Authorities say Chalhoub implanted 234 pacemakers in patience at St. Joseph London hospital between 2007 and 2011.

Prosecutors say dozens of the cases were not required under medical guidelines. Chalhoub was convicted of defrauding Medicare, Medicaid and other insurers in the scheme.

He faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced, which is scheduled for Aug. 14.
