LAUREL COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) A firefighter dedicated to saving lives is going to donate a kidney to a fellow firefighter in Florida.

Tasha Prince said that she has always loved helping people, but it wasn’t until she joined the McWhorter Volunteer Fire Department in Laurel County that she felt her true calling.

"It’s an honor to be able to wear this uniform and it’s an honor to serve your community. I love fighting fire and anybody will tell you that," said Prince.

Recently, Prince came across the story of a fellow volunteer firefighter in Florida needing a kidney transplant.

"I’ve never met her. Don’t know her. Not kin to her," said Prince.

Prince reached out to Melissa Franco and decided she would donate a kidney to her.

"And she’s only 23, and if she doesn’t have one, she’s gonna die. So it was a very simple choice for me," said Prince.

Before she heads to Tampa for four days of tests, Prince has a month to rest. Then the doctors will decide which kidney and then schedule the surgery.

"She’s excited. She’s been through a lot. It’s an awesome feeling. You know, even if I don’t know her, it doesn’t matter. It’s another sister in red. That’s how I look at it," she said.
