ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Fire crews remained on scene Sunday morning, a day after a garage fire spread to nearby woods and threatened area homes.

The City of Irvine Fire Department said in a Facebook post early Sunday that its crews were working along with Kentucky Division of Forestry personnel to ensure all hot spots are completely extinguished.

On Saturday evening, firefighters were called out and found a garage fully engulfed in flames.

Officials said winds spread the fire to nearby woods.

Homeowner Joyce Rawlins’ stomach dropped this afternoon when she saw smoke on the way back to her Irvine home.

“The closer I got, my heart just kept beating and beating so fast I thought well I’m going to have a heart attack right here in the driveway,” said Rawlins.

She says she was terrified of what she would find.

“I was coming up the street and the more I came, I thought it was my house burning and I got scared,” said Rawlins.

Firefighters say the flames spread fast because of the wind and now 10 to 20 acres of the forest may be affected. They’re working to keep homes safe, while division of forestry workers try to stomp out the fire.

“I just thank god it wasn’t my house and nobody got hurt and everybody is safe,” said Rawlins.
