ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – A fire in Estill County spreads to a nearby forest and gets dangerously close to homes Saturday evening.

Homeowner Joyce Rawlins’ stomach dropped this afternoon when she saw smoke on the way back to her Irvine home.

“The closer I got, my heart just kept beating and beating so fast I thought well I’m going to have a heart attack right here in the driveway,” said Rawlins.

She says she was terrified of what she would find.

“I was coming up the street and the more I came, I thought it was my house burning and I got scared,” said Rawlins.

Irvine firefighters say her neighbor may have been burning trash when the fire got out of control spreading to the nearby woods. Thankfully Rawlins home is safe, but she won’t relax until the fire is out.

“We will be here all night watching,” said Rawlins.

Firefighters say the flames spread fast because of the wind and now 10 to 20 acres of the forest may be affected. They’re working to keep homes safe, while division of forestry workers try to stomp out the fire.

“I just thank god it wasn’t my house and nobody got hurt and everybody is safe,” said Rawlins.
