LEXINGTON, KY. (LEX 18)– A shooting investigation has now become a murder investigation for Lexington police.

30-year-old Jason Smith, the victim in Sunday night’s shooting on Corral Street, has died from his injuries.

Police have issued a warrant for 27-year-old Aramis Murray and are searching for him, while the victim’s family is just beginning to process their loss.

"I just hope that person realizes that they’ve taken a father away from their children," said Rachel Smith, the estranged wife of the victim.

Smith said she has been separated from her husband for a few years, but they have two children together.

"To not know as a parent how you’re going to explain to your kids that their dad’s gone and the reason that there dad is gone… is…no parent should have to do that."

Rachel says Jason will not only be remembered as a loving father, but as a giving person, too.

"That was him overall, I mean, he’d give you his shirt off his back and he’d give money to anybody that would ask if he had it. He’d give his last dollar."

Jason’s family is hoping the community will return the favor as they face these unexpected funeral costs.

They’ve set up a GoFundMe page to give Jason the funeral they say he deserves.

"Especially out of no where, it’s just… it’s not something that you wake up and think that you have to do."
