LAUREL COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) A Laurel County woman has been arrested after police say she stole $768.43 worth of items at a Walmart near Corbin. Deputies say her three children were present at the time of the crime and that she used the children to hide the stolen items.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office reports that Monday morning around 3:19 a.m., 38-year-old Marlena Carter was arrested at the Walmart after their loss prevention team attempted to detain her. She had gone back inside the store and entered a bathroom.

An investigation was conducted and deputies said that they learned she was using the self-checkout lane and had not scanned all her items. In addition, she allegedly used her three children to help her. The kids were found to have several layers of clothes, bras, and shoes, that they were wearing wrapped around them and under their clothes.

The total theft value was $768.43.

Carter was charged with theft by unlawful taking – shoplifting $500 or more but under $10,000 and three counts of unlawful transaction with a minor second-degree. She was put in the Laurel County Detention Center.
