FLOYD COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) – On Tuesday, many patiently waited to hear if their names would be called for elk hunting permits.

It was the first live drawing and only 710 names were chosen out of nearly 80,000 applicants. Kentucky has quickly become one of the best places in the country to hunt elk. The mayor for the City of Prestonsburg said it is not just great for hunters, but for tourism in the eastern part of Kentucky as well.

"We are the elk capital. We are where it’s happening at and the fact that we are giving the presentation here, we are really excited about that," said Prestonsburg Mayor Les Stapleton.

Eastern Kentucky has the largest Rocky Mountian Elk population east of the Rock Mountains.

Several people turned out Tuesday afternoon to watch the live drawing, crossing their fingers to hear their name called.

Elk Hunting season runs September-December. You can check the results on the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources website.
