JACKSON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — The widow of the man killed in a Jackson County shooting tells LEX 18 that the suspect was only trying to protect her during a domestic disturbance.

Police were called to a home on Old Island City Road where they found a man’s body inside a car. The man had been shot. The widow of the man identifies him as Jacob Simpson, her estranged husband.

The woman, who we are not naming, said she had an Emergency Protective Order against Simpson and that he had barged into her trailer and grabbed her out of bed as their young daughter slept.

She called her mother for help and that’s when her mother’s boyfriend, 39-year-old Jess Messer showed up on the scene. State Police believe that Messer shot Simpson in his car.

A neighbor also called 911 to report the domestic disturbance.

Messer has been charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence.

Simpson’s wife told LEX 18 that she hopes that the murder charge is dismissed and that he would never mean to harm anyone.
