WOLFE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – A group of hikers were rescued overnight after getting lost in the Red River Gorge.

According to Wolfe County Search and Rescue, dispatch received a 911 call from two lost subjects in Red River Gorge on the Wildcat Trail Head. The two only had 1% battery life on their phone, so triangulating their position proved difficult.

WCSART divided into teams and began searching in the area near Swift Camp Creek Trail.  Finally, one team was able to make verbal contact.

At 2 a.m., the group was located and rescuers walked the pair to their car.

While it is well known, Wildcat Trail Head is not an official trail in the Gorge.

"We have had several incidents at this location as hikers who are not familiar with the area believe that this is an official trail. Although it does have some nice campsites, the trails in this area are not official trails, not marked and can get very confusing. As always, bring a map with you, do a little preplanning before heading off into the backcountry. It might very well save you a long night setting in the pitch black darkness," the group posted to their Facebook page.
