LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – the school year in Lexington will end this week, but some students are already thinking about how to make next year better.

Art students at Dunbar High School hope their "buddy benches" will help students find a new friend.

The concept is simple. The bench is placed at a playground and if a new or shy child doesn’t have anyone to play with, they go sit on the bench. That sends a signal to the others that they would like to be invited to play.

The students created 8 of different designs and those benches will be placed at elementary schools across Lexington.

"I hope it helps shy kids as well because I was one. I know it’s hard to sometimes go up to people and talk to them and ask them to play. So it’s like giving them a sign to please come over and talk to me. I think that will really be helpful," student Caitlin LaBianca told LEX 18.
