MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) The Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky Organization crowned its 21st winner earlier this year, and now she’s on a mission to advocate for the tens of thousands of Kentuckians living with disabilities just like her.

Mary Breiner is Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky 2018. She started using a wheelchair 20 years ago due to advanced spinal stenosis. She admitted that she wasn’t even aware the Ms.Wheelchair Kentucky Organization existed until a year ago, but after some prodding from friends, she signed up and was crowned in January.

Her title has taken her all around the state as she advocates for people with disabilities.

"For the first time since being in a wheelchair, I’m finally getting to use it for a good purpose," she said.

Her mission is to bring visibility to a community that so often feels invisible.

"We still have dreams, we still have goals, we just do them from a wheelchair, or whatever our disability is," said Breiner.

Breiner heads to Michigan later this summer to compete on the national level.

"It’s kind of like, I know the reason I’m here now, at this point in my life, and I want to use it to make a difference," said Breiner.

Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky is open to women ages 21-60 who use wheelchairs to get around. Learn more here
