PULASKI COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) A Pulaski County man is hoping to get in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest collection of cassette tapes in the world.

John Platt’s obsession is more than just a hobby. Nestled in his home, you’ll find a musical treasure trove like nothing you’ve seen before. Platt started collecting cassette tapes more than 40 years ago and now he’s hoping his decades of dedication will make the Guinness Book of World Records.

In his garage, you’ll find 23,000 tapes alphabetized and carefully logged. He says dozens of friends, family members and complete strangers have helped him in his quest.

But what started as a bet has turned into so much more for Platt in the moment he realized his son, who has autism, responds to the music.

"I normally have guitars out here and we play music and do things together. And that’s what brought him out he started singing before he ever said a word. The schools had given up, they were teaching him sign language and everything," Platt told LEX 18.

After a major event this weekend with volunteers helping verify his collection, Platt says he’s now ready to end on a sweet note. He is submitting the record request in his son’s name.

"When they hand that award to my son, the smile on his face, that’s what it’s all about now," said Platt with a smile.
